half awake and half asleep in the water is the name of a series by Asako Narahashi (楢橋朝子) that I find horrifying. She snapped the shots around Japan between 2000 and 2003.
I am not a very good swimmer. And I am rather uncomfortable in the water. I cannot escape a sense of fear. Even if I decide that I want to take a photograph from there (=within the water), there are times when I just can't do it. And I cannot freely create any distance. I want to be open to all sorts of things and I decided to remain uncomfortable.
